Have a great summer!

June 3, 2010

It is amazing that the 2009-2010 school year has come to a close. Your children have learned so much! They are reading, writing, and evening beginning to solve addition and subtration problems. We are so proud all the progress they made this year.

Please continue to have your child practice the skills that were taught this year. Below are some things you can do with your child over the summer to help keep what they learned fresh in their minds.

*Set aside at least 15 minutes a day for reading. This can be your child reading to you and you reading to your child. Create a special reading area in your child’s room. Put a special pillow or stuffed animal in this area. Make sure the area has good lighting. Have books available for your child in this cozy area. Remember to check out your local library to bring home new and interesting books.

*Check out the great websites listed on our Websites page!!

* Use our high frequency word list and go on a word hunt, write, play games like memory, etc . Check cereal boxes, newspapers, magazines, flyers, etc. and see how many times the popcorn words appear! (I, a, my, the, go, to , he, come, here, this, me for, where, do, you, look, one, see, what, two, up, down, we, want, out, who, are, they, she, good, and, give, little, that, have, there)

* Have your child practice writing. You can have them write lists, journal about a great trip or special day, write a letter to someone and mail it, etc.

* Check out stores like the Dollar Tree and Walmart to find inexpensive items such as crayons, markers, stickers, special paper, etc. to keep in the house for fun activities. Your children are so creative! You might even find them trying to teach you something they learned this year.

This is about spending time with your child, having fun together, and teaching your child that learning is FUN!!! Enjoy!
